Summer Aid

We have resources to help you calculate your Summer Session costs, apply for summer financial aid and explore other financing options.

General Summer Aid Eligibility Requirements for Summer 2024:
  • Federal Pell Grants will be automatically awarded to undergraduate students for Summer 2024 based on their 2024-2025 FAFSA.
  • Pell Grant Award Amounts:
    • Students who are not enrolled for Summer 2024 will receive a projected Pell award based on full-time enrollment (12+ credits).
    • Students who are enrolled for Summer 2024 will have Pell awards offered based upon actual enrollment.
    • Students do not need to contact our office to report summer enrollment changes, our office will automatically update awards based on actual enrollment.
      • Students who do not enroll for Summer 2024 will have their Pell offers cancelled after the last add/drop date for Summer in mid-July
  • Have Federal Direct Loan eligibility as determined by your 2024-2025 FAFSA.
  • Be enrolled for the Summer Session I and/or Summer Session II terms for at least six (6) credits combined.
    • Audited courses do not count towards enrollment for financial aid purposes.
  • Complete a Summer Loan Request
    • The deadline to submit summer loan requests is August 1, 2024.
    • The priority deadline of May 1, 2024 is waived due to the FAFSA delays this year. Summer loan requests will be processed as quickly as possible and applicants will not be assessed May late fees.
  • Federal loan amounts are regulated by maximum Federal Direct Loan eligibility.
    • If you are eligible to receive a portion of your Federal Direct Loans during the summer session, your yearly Direct Loan offer will be split evenly between the summer, fall and spring semesters.  

*Please note that any loan eligibility utilized for the summer semester will reduce your eligibility for the remainder of the 2024-2025 academic year.

    • If offered, you can accept all or part of the offered loan(s) via myUMBC.
    • Once accepted, funds will appear on your billing account as pending financial aid.
    • A valid Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Entrance Counseling must be on record.

Federal Parent PLUS Loan
  • The Federal Parent PLUS Loan is a credit-based loan that the parent(s) of a dependent undergraduate student may borrow to help pay educational expenses.
    • Parents must confirm their eligibility by completing a separate Parent PLUS application. Because the loan is credit-based, the application may not be approved.
  • Upon credit approval, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will be notified and will process the loan.
    • Once processed, funds will appear on the student’s billing account as pending financial aid.
  • Students must be enrolled in the Summer Session I and/or Summer Session II terms for at least six (6) credits combined to be eligible for a Federal Parent PLUS Loan.
    • Audited courses do not count towards enrollment for financial aid purposes.

Federal Grad PLUS Loan
  • The Federal Grad PLUS Loan is a credit-based loan that graduate students may borrow to help pay educational expenses.
    • Students must confirm their eligibility by completing a separate Grad PLUS application. Because the loan is credit-based, the application may not be approved.
  • Upon credit approval, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will be notified and will process the loan.
    • Once processed, funds will appear on the student’s account as pending financial aid.
  • Students must be enrolled for Summer Session I and/or Summer Session II terms for at least six (6) credits combined to be eligible for a Federal Grad PLUS Loan.
    • Audited courses do not count towards enrollment for financial aid purposes.

Alternative (Private) Loan
  • All eligible students should complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to determine maximum Federal student grant and loan eligibility prior to seeking alternative (private) loan options from a private lender(s).
  • A valid application must be submitted to the lender of your choice. Click here for more information about the alternative loan option and application process.
    • SAP requirements vary by lender.
    • Enrollment status requirements vary by lender.
  • Upon approval, the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will be notified and will process the loan.
  • The summer term consists of all Summer Sessions. For this reason, financial aid eligibility will be reviewed following the last add/drop date of Summer Session II.
    • Financial aid will be approved or adjusted based on your final enrollment for the combined Summer Session I and Summer Session II.
    • Financial Aid will be applied to your billing account in mid-July.
  • Federal Loans and/or the Federal Pell Grant may not cover your total Summer Session charges.
    • Calculate your anticipated expenses and anticipated summer aid to determine your out-of-pocket cost.
    • Plan for out-of-pocket payment, or consider additional loan options.
  • If your anticipated financial aid will not cover your balance and you do not pay the difference prior to your bill due date, a late fee will be assessed.
  • If you need to purchase books, and will be awaiting your refund, you may request a book loan to purchase your books at the bookstore.
Summer Scholarships
  • The Office of Summer, Winter, and Special Programs offers a limited number of full and partial tuition scholarships.
  • These scholarships are available to UMBC degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students who have a high GPA and are close to graduating.
