Why does the 60% date matter?
Students are awarded federal financial aid with the assumption that they will remain enrolled in and successfully complete all attempted courses. Federal regulations state that students must complete 60% or more of a semester to be eligible to keep the full amount of their federal aid.
If a student withdraws from all of their courses prior to the 60% point of a semester, their federal aid (including aid that has already applied to the balance) will be prorated based on when the withdraw occurred. This calculation is done on a case by case basis after the withdrawal date is established, and the proration may result in a balance opening on the student’s account that they will be responsible for paying.
