UMBC’s Education Abroad Office, located in suite 207 of the University Center, is available to assist students in their pursuit of specific study abroad programs. Please contact the Education Abroad Office for the initial planning or assistance with any international experience.
Types of Aid Available
Students may be eligible for the following types of aid while enrolled in study abroad programs:
- Federal and Institutional financial aid including: Pell Grant, FSEOG, UMBC Grant, Direct Loans, PLUS Loans
- Merit Scholarships
- State Grants and Scholarships (if the selected study abroad program is sponsored by an in-state institution)
- Alternative Loans
How to Request Aid for Study Abroad
Students are encouraged to contact their Financial Aid Counselor when considering study abroad before they apply to gain an understanding of their available financial aid options for different programs.
Once registered for study abroad, students must submit the Study Abroad Aid Request Form below for consideration to use any financial aid abroad. This form should be submitted at least 60 days in advance of the expected departure date to allow time for processing. We cannot guarantee disbursement of financial aid before billing due dates if the form is not submitted on time.
Please note that with submission of this form you will also be automatically considered for any scholarships (merit, Scholar Programs, etc.) eligible to be used towards your study abroad experience, therefore you will only need to submit this form once to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. You will receive separate communications regarding your scholarships and financial aid study abroad eligibility.
Students will include the following items for review:
- Official Study Abroad Budget Form (this can be obtained from the Education Abroad Office).
- Any additional documents you need completed for the specific program.
- The student will initial to indicate their agreement with the Study Abroad Statement of Understanding.

Information regarding financial aid that is eligible to be applied to study abroad will be sent to the student’s UMBC email within 14 business days.
The student’s financial aid counselor may request a meeting with the student after receipt of the form in order to verify information or discuss aid eligibility. Students should monitor their UMBC email after submission of the form for updates.
