Types of Aid Available
Students may be eligible for the following types of aid while enrolled in study abroad programs:
- Federal and Institutional financial aid including: Pell Grant, FSEOG, UMBC Grant, Direct Loans, PLUS Loans
- Merit Scholarships
- State Grants and Scholarships are available if the selected study abroad program is sponsored by an in-state institution.

How to Request Aid
Students are encouraged to contact their Financial Aid Counselor when considering study abroad to gain an understanding of available financial aid options. Once registered for study abroad, students must schedule an appointment to meet with a Financial Aid Counselor at least 60 days prior to their departure date or UMBC’s semester start date, whichever is earlier.
At this appointment students must submit:
- An Official Study Abroad Budget, which is provided by the Education Abroad Office. In addition, if the program is requesting financial aid information, students must bring any relevant forms for completion.
- An acceptance letter or email from your study abroad program
The Financial Aid Counselor will provide information on the types of aid available, additional aid options, the timing for disbursement of aid and how to pay the program.
If students do not meet with a Financial Aid Counselor 60 days prior to the program start, we cannot guarantee receipt of funds prior to departure.
